The following photos show how similar to crochet using a latch hook can be…
First make these bullion chains.
Using a latch hook. The red chain is made by adding interest, by winding the yarn around the hook 5 times befor yarning over and pulling through. The green chain is similar, but the yarn is wound around 10 times before yarning over and pulling through. There are 5 chains in between each ‘bump’.
Be creative and get used to experimenting with these chains.
What you can try….
Make really big bumps.
make a chain with different sized bumps.
make the bumps close together.
make long and short chains in between.
make a lumpy, bumpy scrumble.
Using a latch hook with beginners adds a new dimension in learning to crochet.
being able to use the hook to pull through a multiple of yarn overs adds
volume to easily made motifs.
Using the latch hook to make bullion stitches is a well used method by experienced crocheters. However, using a latch hook with beginners to make chains ,makes the idea of progressing straight onto bullion stitches, an easy way forward.
Please note that using a latch hook can for many beginners help them get started,as in making chains. However it is just as important to help them to master using a standard hook as soon as they are able.
